Algeria forward, Riyad Mahrez has confirmed Arsenal were interested in signing him before the beginning of this season.
He however did not want to force the transfer to avert having problem with Leicester City. He however admitted he wanted to leave in July, having turned down a new contract worth around £80,000 a week.
Arsenal were reported to have offered £35m for the PFA player of they year, who was purchased by Leicester City for a mere £375,000.
Mahrez has now confirmed that there was interest in him from Arsenal:
“There was contact with Arsenal, but Leicester wanted to keep me and I was pretty expensive. I did not want to create a conflict when the offer came in.
“Personally, I think it is a good thing I stayed put. It’s now up to me to prove myself again.”
A diplomatic display by Mahrez, I must say. The tendency of him leaving Leicester this season is high, as they have dropped last season's fine form.
