Liverpool defender rejects Cameroon international call up

Written by: Jeje Tomori

Head coach of the Cameroon national team, Hugo Broos has disclosed that the Marvin and Joel Matip rejected national team call-ups.

The two brothers refused to join up with the Belgian tactician's squad, as both preferred to stay with their club sides, Joel Matip with Liverpool FC, and Marvin with German club, FC Ingolstadt 04.

"There are players who never wanted to come and play these games," Broos said, while speaking with journalists.

"They have their reasons but it also shows that if these people are not there it's a good thing. It means they do not have the necessary will. I refer in particular to the Matip brothers.

"For Joel, I called him 15 times and I even sent him messages but he never responded. Marvin preferred to stay with his club,"he added.

"The ball is in their court. If they want to come play with Cameroon they should call me and say: 'I am ready'." he said.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have already qualified for the 2017 AFCON finals.

Their last Group M game will be against Gambia in Limbe on Saturday 3rd September.
